The new extension for the Pecci Museum for Contemporary Art in Prato, Italy has been designed by Architect Maurice Nio. Extra volume has been created and through a new orientation of the main entrance, the entrance has become better visible and the exposition area has been enlarged. Zonneveld ingenieurs b.v. made the earthquake resistant structural design for the extension.
To make the building as light as possible, the design incorporates a steel structure with composite slab floors at level 1. The roof consists of steel girders with wooden purlins and wood plating. This reduces the mass of the building and therefore reduces the responce forces during an earthquake.
Another feature of the earthquake resistant structural design are the "eccentric bracings", that absorb the energy created by an earthquake.
The project consisted of the restauration of the monumental old building for the Dordrechts Museum for the permanent collection. The extension is for temporary exibitions and has been kept separate from the old building as a hoovering ‘stealth’ volume. Kraaijvanger architecten designed the exterior, Merkx + Girod Architecten designed the interior. The inner court has been roofed over, which creates a significant extension of the exibition area. By moving the entrance to the middle of the garden facade, the logistics of the building were also significantly improved. The entire museum was renovated at the same time.
Within the Dordrechts Museum is, apart from the exibitions, a shop, a restaurant and a library project.
